The latest version of Messenger for XP works with all Jaws versions back to 10, so get it. The latest version for Vista and Windows 7 is limited, so skip that one for a while.

The only thing I don't like about 11 is that it keeps signing me in and out even if I am connected to the internet. Haven't figured out why it's doing that.

I've got Jaws 12 and I had the Beta before it was a final release and I tried the 11 when it was released and it worked somewhat, but not well, so give it up and went back. I posted on it even, so is it now working better? Microsoft, for some reason fixes it later, not out of the gate.

Okay bit the bullet again and install 2011 and it's working nicely. It did not with Jaws 12 Beta, but does with the latest full version. Here is the reason you are seeming to be on or offline. Under options and general theri is a chedck box that say "sho me as away when I am idle for" and it have a minute value. This is the case with all messenger, but with 2011 if you are away it shows you as offline to your contacts to you, not to them, so you see the message next to your contacts name "you are appearing offline to this person. That changes to online soon as you touch your computer and start doing things again. If you don't like this setting uncheck that box.
Control T and arrow up to options. Click it and shift tab up to general. Hope this helps.

So a friend of mine has downloaded the latest version for WL messenger and isn't satisfied with the interface. Is there a way to go back? I know when I used to use Windows Live I would use something called Resource Hacker to trick the program and make it think I was using an earlier version. Is this still doable? If so, what is the exact version for the latest? Is it version 15?

Also, if there are any other ways to downgrade and still be able to use WL I would love to know them so I can help my friend as soon as possible.

Simply remove windows live 2011 under add and remove programs, or uninstall a program if you have 7. Next go to www.oldversion.com/MSN-Messenger.html and their you can download MSN 2009 the latest version for XP. It's like the version you had before you updated. It installs the same, you keep your contacts and all. Last under updates hide, or ignore the update for 2011 until you decide you want it. I like it with Jaws 12, but did not when it was first released and I was using Jaws beta, but the latest version works nicely.

ummmm nooo. the fact is, even if you're just removing it from add/remove programs, it won't get removed entirely. also it's not letting us install the old version of it. it is saying that already an higher version is installed so blah blah blah.

there are many ways and of course there are few softwares for removing it entirely. but what I did is, I just restored my computer to an earlier time after uninstalling that inaccesible wlm stinky shit.

and now, I got my older version and it works fine with my jaws11.

If it doesn't uninstall properly, I'd go to computer, then the C drive, then program files and remove the folder, then it should install the older version easy.

this won't work with that way either. it's not removing the registry entries. and deleting the registry entries without knowledge is not recommended so.

Interesting. I've not had the few people I've helped to fix it have these issues removing and installing the new, so. I can see how it might happen however.

I went with the restore option a while back, restored to an earlier time, installed an earlier version and changed the version numbers with Rsource Hacker. It ended up working just fine. Thanks for the suggestions, though.

I wasn't going to install the newer version of WLM but the latest beta of Window-Eyes seems to work qite nicely with it. My only question is how one goes about changing the personal message that you can optionally have show up after your name whenever someone arrows down to yu on their contact list. It used to be in Tools/Options/Personal as I recall but that no longer seems to be the case.
